Over time, fat and other structures within our body that keep our skin looking youthful and plumped up, begin to break down. This results in facial depressions, folds and wrinkles. Fat transfer can plump up these hollow and sunken areas, and can add fullness to the lips and cheeks. This fat can even improve the skin’s texture. Fat transfer for facial rejuvenation at our New Jersey center is performed in our AAAHC certified OR suite, where we borrow your own fat from your least favorite repository, and layer it in multiple fine microthreads with fine needles, leaving no sutures or visible scars.

 The Skinny on Fat Transfer

While there are other fillers like Restylane® in New Jersey that can provide temporary volume to the skin, they may not be the best option for larger areas or for those who want more lasting results. Dr. Hughes specializes in fat transfer for facial rejuvenation for Philadelphia and New Jersey patients, many of whom combine this procedure with laser skin resurfacing for optimal results. Fat transfer procedures may also be used as part of a comprehensive approach to facelift surgery in New Jersey to address skin sagging, loss of volume, and wrinkles.

The fat transfer procedure can be broken down as follows:

  • Fat transfer is an office procedure performed with local anesthesia or IV sedation.
  • Using a small cannula attached to a syringe, small amounts of fat are removed from a donor site like the abdomen, saddle bags, flanks, or knees.
  • The fat is processed and reinjected with a tiny needle just under the skin wrinkle or depression.
  • Additional fat may be harvested, frozen and stored sterilely for potential future touch-ups for up to six months. This frozen fat “takes” just as well as fresh fat.

Fat taken from your own body offers the most natural, safe and long-lasting facial restoration. The downside is up to 6 weeks of swelling, however most patients return to work in 10 days. After 3 months the fat take is evaluated, and up to 50% of patients request a touch up for a much lesser downtime, and a nominal fee. Your stored fat will be saved in our freezer for 1 year. The results of the fat transfer can vary from patient to patient.
