IPL – Intense Pulsed Light

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) therapy, also known as a photo facial, is a non-invasive treatment that improves skin tone, reduces pigmentation, and minimizes redness for a more even, radiant complexion.

What is Intense Pulsed Light?

IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light therapy, is a skin rejuvenation treatment that uses broad-spectrum light to target sun damage, age spots, redness, and uneven skin tone. Unlike lasers, which use a single wavelength of light, IPL emits multiple wavelengths, allowing it to address multiple skin concerns simultaneously. The light energy is absorbed by pigment in the skin, breaking down discoloration and stimulating collagen production for a brighter, smoother complexion.

At The Hughes Center in Cherry Hill, NJ, we use IPL to treat rosacea, sunspots, freckles, broken capillaries, and overall skin discoloration. This treatment is ideal for individuals looking for a non-invasive way to improve skin clarity and reduce pigmentation issues.  The Hughes Center uses the Sciton BBL & Palomar Icon by Cynosure.

WHY CONSIDER IPL – Intense Pulsed Light?

  • You have sun damage, freckles, or age spots you’d like to fade
  • You want to reduce redness from rosacea or broken capillaries
  • You’re looking for a non-invasive way to improve skin tone and texture
  • You prefer a treatment with minimal discomfort and little to no downtime
  • You want to stimulate collagen production for long-term skin rejuvenation

What is Treatment Like?

During an IPL session, pulses of light are delivered to the skin using a handheld device. Patients may feel a mild snapping or warming sensation, but the procedure is generally well tolerated.

The treatment usually takes 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.

There is no downtime, though mild redness or slight swelling may occur, similar to a mild sunburn, which typically resolves within a few hours.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Most patients see significant improvement after three to five treatments, spaced about four weeks apart.

Results continue to develop over time as the skin naturally sheds pigmented spots and regenerates with healthier, clearer skin.

What Else do I Need to Know?

IPL is safe for most skin types, though it works best for those with lighter skin tones and pigment-related concerns.

Sun protection is crucial after treatment, as the skin will be more sensitive to UV exposure.

While IPL effectively reduces pigmentation, maintenance sessions may be recommended to prolong results.

Patients should be using medical grade skin care in combination with the IPL treatment to get best outcomes and maintain the results of the treatment series.
