What is Fat Transfer & CO2 Laser?

Facial cosmetic surgery can mean different things to different people. You may want to minimize the early signs of aging, or perhaps you’re looking for a more dramatic improvement to your appearance. A complete facial rejuvenation is best refined with CO2 or fractionated laser skin resurfacing and facial fat transfer.

Surgical facelifts, brow lifts, cheek lifts, and neck lifts alone do not remove most wrinkles or restore lost facial volume. That’s why laser skin resurfacing and fat transfer are often used together to enhance results. Since each person’s facial structure is unique, so are the outcomes of these procedures.

What is Treatment Like?

This procedure is performed in our AAAHC-accredited operating room under local anesthesia and oral sedation (light medications and numbing medicine). It is a one-time treatment that can last 8 to 10 years if the skin is properly protected and maintained.

Fat is carefully harvested from the abdomen, flanks or knees, as these areas provide the best quality fat for transfer. It is then purified and injected into areas of the face that need volume restoration. Since the body naturally absorbs about 50% of the injected fat, some patients may require a touch-up procedure for optimal long-term results.

How to Plan for Your Procedure

Patients should be at a stable weight before considering fat transfer. Skin must be prepped with medical-grade skincare for 2 to 6 weeks, depending on skin type, to ensure the best possible results.

The initial downtime is typically 7 to 10 days, during which the skin heals, and any swelling subsides. Patients may appear pink for 3 to 6 months, but makeup can be applied after 7 to 10 days to help conceal any redness.

What Else do I Need to Know?

  • Allow time for social recovery. Patients should schedule their procedure at least six months before major events such as weddings or reunions to ensure the most natural appearance by the time of the event.
  • CO2 or fractionated laser resurfacing improves fine lines, pigmentation and skin texture. This heat treatment creates a controlled superficial burn, leading to tighter, thicker and smoother skin as it heals.
  • Fat transfer is often combined with other procedures. Many patients choose to enhance their results with procedures such as an endoscopic brow lift, facelift, or mid-face lift to achieve a more youthful and harmonious look.
